You own the right to play them and loan them to friends but placing the content back into the public domain (uploading it onto the web) breaches copyright laws

It is completely legal to watch videos on a video playing device! Assuming the video is legal itself, simply drag the icon of the video into the box on this program, click convert, and it will make a playable, properly sized version of the video. Then just drag the new mp4 video into the movies section of itunes.

There are several websites that do so, however, they are often limited to converting a small amount (5-10min of film).

Bought DVDs can be harder with all the anti-piracy software on them, but I’m sure a google search can be used to find the appropriate software.

If they are homemade or downloaded a simple click and drag into itunes should do the trick. However, if you want to convert them to fit onto your Ipod/Iphone use this:

This convert the movie file into the appropriate resolution and file extension (mpeg4) to play in an ipod etc.. plus it has nice interface and is really easy to use

iPod accepts MP4 format, so you just need a converter that will go from DVD to MP4, and then transfer the MP4 files to your iPod with the sync of iTunes Library. I always use Clone2Go DVD to iPod Converter. It combines the following features into one program:

      1. Rip DVD to iPod
      2. Convert video to iPod
      3. Download YouTube video to iPod

Here is the step by step tutorial that shows you how to rip DVD movies, convert video files and download YouTube videos to iPod:
